Sofia Goggia unbeatable in Cortina

Cortina d’Ampezzo (Belluno), 22nd January 2022 – She was very strong in the two-time trials, she went very strong in the race, putting all her rivals behind and winning the sixth victory of the season, the seventeenth of her World Cup career.

In the downhill of Cortina d’Ampezzo, whose start was moved down in front of the Duca D’Aosta hut because of the strong wind in the upper part, Sofia Goggia confirmed herself as the queen of the world speed. She won (the second victory in Cortina after the one, always in downhill, of 2018) despite two important mistakes.

The Austrian Ramona Siebenhofer (who won the two downhill races in Cortina in 2019) was 20 hundredths behind her, while the podium was completed by the multi-talented athlete from the Czech Republic Ester Ledecká, who just over a month ago won the Snowboard World Cup on the Ampezzo slopes.

THE VOICES OF THE PROTAGONISTS – “I don’t know how I was able to win,” commented Sofia Goggia. “Winning one week after the fall in Zauchensee is something incredible. It was a difficult race today, with the lowered start and the wind gusts that were strong anyway.  I got my most beautiful World Cup victory, right here in Cortina: of course, not because of the skiing performance but because of many different factors. And now I am concentrating on the Super-G because the most important race is always the one to come“.

This result gives me confidence for the Olympics, which start in a couple of weeks,” said second placed Ramona Siebenhofer. “I really like Cortina, the Olympia delle Tofane is one of my favorite slopes. Sofia Goggia?  She is in great shape; she always remains calm in every situation and tries to find the fastest line“.

I very much like the atmosphere in Cortina, I feel at ease here, as proven by my victory in the Snowboard World Cup in December,” Ester Ledecká points out. “Last year I came fourth twice at the Alpine Ski World Championships and this third place is a small redemption for me. I am happy with the podium but not too much with my performance: I made a lot of mistakes and I need to work on them.”
