Italians shine in first time trial of Cortina Audi FIS Ski World Cup

Three Italians in the top three on the opening day of the 2025 edition of the Women’s Alpine Ski World Cup in Cortina d’Ampezzo.

 

Cortina d’Ampezzo, 16 January 2025 – Italy was in great form in the first time trial ahead of the Audi FIS Ski World Cup downhill to be staged on the Olympia of the Tofane on Saturday 18 January.

Federica Brignone was first, 5 hundredths ahead of Sofia Goggia, while Nadia Delago from Gardena completed the podium. Two other Italians in the top ten: ninth Elena Curtoni, 1’17” behind, tenth Marta Bassino, one hundredth behind.

Race in control for Lindsey Vonn, who crashed in the final section. The American is one of the most eagerly awaited athletes: on her comeback after a five-year break, she finished sixth and fourth in the last two races in San Anton (Austria), and in Cortina she presents herself with great ambitions, she who is a multiple winner in Ampezzo with twelve victories (six in downhill and six in super-G).

«Wonderful slope, even more beautiful than usual, with the warm snow that I prefer, good grip. I’m skiing very well, I’m in good condition, let’s see if we can make it happen» said Federica Brignone, who never made it onto the podium in Cortina.

Nadia Delago was also pleased with her performance: «Fantastic track that gave me a good feeling right from the start. I am very confident, and I want to confirm what I have done so far. If I analyse today’s descent, I got the three gates right after the Delta, while in the final I stood a bit to test the track and the jump.»

«Cortina is special for me» comment Elena Curtoni, who won the Super-G in 2022 and finished second in the downhill in 2023 on Tofane Olympia. «This is one of my favourite races, I like skiing here and I feel free.»

Friday 17 January, the second time trial. The first athlete will start at 11 a.m. On Saturday, the downhill will start at 11 a.m. and the superG at the same time on Sunday. Both races will be broadcast live on RaiSport and Eurosport.

On Friday 17th, it will be possible to meet the Italian women athletes during the Meet&Greet of the Fisi team: appointment at 6pm in Cortina, in Piazza Angelo Dibona.

Also in Piazza Angelo Dibona, on Saturday 18th at 5pm, there will be a ‘Meet&Greet’ with Team Italia Paris 2024: swimmer Nicolò Martinenghi (gold in the 100m breaststroke), fencer Mara Navarria (gold in the team event), canoeist Giovanni De Gennaro (gold in the K1 slalom) and sailor Caterina Banti (gold with Ruggero Tita on the Nacra 17).
