Cortina d’Ampezzo (Belluno), 19 January 2023 – Sofia Goggia ahead of the pack in the second training run, before the downhill which will kick off the three days of the Cortina Women’s Ski World Cup, tomorrow, Friday 20 January. On the Olympia delle Tofane, which last year saw her triumph in the downhill, and injured the day after in the superG, the champion from Bergamo left USA’s Isabella Wright behind by 0.19 seconds and Norway’s Ragnhild Mowinckel by 0.49 seconds. USA’s Mikaela Shiffrin achieved the fourth fastest time (+0.61 seconds), followed by Switzerland’s Lara Gut-Behrami (+0.80 seconds), who had the fastest time yesterday.
«They were two good tests. The first was on easy snow, perhaps the easiest I’ve ever found here in Cortina during all these years. A little affected by the fog» comments Sofia Goggia. «On the second day, flat visibility, track really good. I feel confident about the next few days».
Every drop counts is the slogan proudly displayed on the race bibs of the athletes who will compete in the downhills and super-G Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, in the World Cup in Cortina. Every drop counts is an invite to consider the importance of hydration in everyday life, in particular for those who practice sports. The idea of adding a message on the race bibs of the Cortina Ski World Cup was born a few years ago, with the realization that major sports events and their protagonists can be an important vehicle to spread positive messages. «This year we have once again decided on a theme related to health and wellbeing» explains Anna Bosetti, responsible for Sponsors and PR at Fondazione Cortina. «We developed the idea in synergy with Unifarco, a Belluno-based producer of cosmetics, nutraceuticals and dermatological products, and Sorgente Valcimoliana Srl, the group that bottles the Dolomia-branded mineral water from a spring in the UNESCO Natural Park of the Friulian Dolomites».
«In addition» explains Bosetti «Every drop counts also refers to the fact that, increasingly, water is a limited resource. We want to draw attention to the fact that we are all responsible for how we use this precious resource in our daily lives».
Volunteering on the slope, the Veneto Regional Ski Instructor’s College and the ski schools– Collaborating with Fondazione Cortina for the three days of the Cortina Ski World Cup, the Scuola sci Cortina, the Scuola sci Azzurra Cortina, the Scuola sci Cristallo, and the Scuola sci Snowdreamers. Also present, the Veneto Regional Ski Instructor’s College with about fifty trainee ski teachers. The class of 2022-2023 are busy as “course slippers” on the Olympia track, entrusted with smoothing the snow surface in all the critical points in order to ensure that the track is always technically perfect and safe for the athletes.
«We are proud to collaborate with Fondazione Cortina on this prestigious event» confirms Luigi Borgo, President of the Veneto Regional Ski Instructor’s College. «The experience on the Olympia completes their training, and will no doubt be invaluable for their future careers. Every champion starts out with a teacher and both these figures are inextricably linked to the economic system of the mountain».
