Cortina d’Ampezzo (Belluno), 17 January 2023 – Cortina d’Ampezzo is ready for a long weekend dedicated to speed, with her much anticipated stage on the Womens’s Alpine Ski World Cup circuit taking place 20-22 January. The three days of races during the Cortina Ski World Cup will see the world’s top female skiers compete in two downhill races and a super-G, as per the variation by the FIS, whereas the original program included a super-G, a downhill, followed by another super-G. In addition to excitement on the slope, Cortina, Queen of Speed will offer a rich programme of events also off the slope, dedicated to sport, celebrations, culture, food, wine, and, of course, spectacular nature.
Do not miss the opportunity to ski with past World Cup champions on the Olympia slope and then watch the arrival of today’s champions at the Rumerlo finish area, from the exclusive vantage point of the Tofana Lounge.
Yesterday’s champions will in fact be the protagonists on Friday evening (20 January) at 18.00, in Piazza Dibona, during the award ceremony after the first downhill race, and the bib draw for the second day of races. On occasion of the 30th anniversary of the World Cup in Cortina, Fondazione Cortina has invited the athletes who made history during 30 years of races on the Olympia. Guests include Renate Götschl and Karen Puzter, Hanna Schnarf and Verena Stuffer. Local athlete, Wendy Siorpaes. will also participate. Other important guests are still expected to confirm their presence. Fans will be able to meet the women who made the Olympia great on the World Cup circuit, and who became great on the Olympia track. There will be a second opportunity to meet these legendary athletes, when they are presented with the symbol of Cortina, the squirrel, at the Tofana Lounge on Saturday morning.
In the finish area at Rumero, the Food Village, located in the parterre area, will be run by the Sestieri d’Ampezzo. The six townships of Cortina will each offer their culinary specialties, create the atmosphere of a traditional village party.
At the Tofana Lounge, spectators will be able to savour products from the four local farms collaborating with the Cortina Ski World Cup through the Fattormia project. The participating farms, Azienda Agricola Sanvido, Azienda Agricola Fratelli Talamini, Santer Società Agricola, and Azienda Agricola Michielli, receive a percentage of the ticket proceeds. The project, supported by Cortina Banca, ensures that 1 euro for each ticket sold is invested in the four farms, sustaining them in their quest to deliver quality products and at the same time look after the territory. «It is a circular economy project that helps sustain the territory» explains Lorenzo Tardini, marketing manager at Fondazione Cortina. «With this project we want to help protect the biodiversity of mountain environments, promote tourism, and give visibility to high quality local products».
As in previous editions, the athletes who reach the podium will receive the Cortina Ski World Cup trophy, in the form of the famous squirrel, created by students of the Cortina Art Institute. «It is made by the art school’s final year students, from pine wood donated to us by the Regole d’Ampezzo» explains Professor Italo Pradella, who leads the project. «Just like previous years, the timber comes from trees felled by the Vaia storm of 2018. New this year, is the fiberglass insert in gold, silver and bronze»
There will of course also be music. At the finish area in Rumerlo, Saturday 21 and Sunday 22, the Italian National Anthem will kick off the races, performed by the artist, guitarist, and music teacher, Giulio Maceroni, who has previously performed at Formula 1 MotoGP races. Sunday (22 January), the tenor Cristian Ricci will move spectators with his interpretations of great Italian symphonic pieces.
Friday 20 January, at 18.00, in the don Pietro Alverà Culture Hall, in Largo Poste, the exhibition “Discese, speciali e giganti” (Downhills, specials and giants), will be presented in collaboration with Una Montagna di Libri. The public will be treated to the adventure of alpine skiing through history, told by two journalists, Matteo Pacor and Stefano Vigliani. The books is published by Mondadori as part of the “Le scie” series.
During this World Cup weekend, the entire town will participate in the celebrations, in the form of après ski events, music and special events taking place in the main bars around the town centre, inviting all guests visiting the Ampezzo Valley to join the party!
